5 Secrets to a Perfectly Fitted Blouse — Tips from Gurgaon's Top Ladies Tailor

A perfectly fitted blouse is the foundation of a beautiful saree or lehenga look. Yet it is the one garment that most women struggle to get right. After tailoring thousands of blouses for ladies across Gurugram over 20+ years, I have identified the 5 secrets that make the difference between a blouse that fits and one that transforms.

Secret 1: The Bust Measurement Is Not Enough

Most tailors take only the bust measurement for a blouse. At Dune Aura Boutique, we take 14 measurements — including the bust, waist, back width, shoulder width, armhole depth, cup size, and the distance from the shoulder to the bust point. Each of these measurements affects the final fit in a different way. If even one is off, the blouse will not fit correctly.

What to do: Always insist that your tailor takes at least 8–10 measurements before cutting your blouse fabric.

Secret 2: The Armhole Depth Determines Comfort

The most common complaint about blouses is that they feel tight or uncomfortable when raising the arms. This is almost always caused by an incorrect armhole depth. The armhole must be deep enough to allow free movement but not so deep that it gaps or shows the bra.

What to do: Tell your tailor if you tend to raise your arms frequently (for dancing, for example) so they can adjust the armhole depth accordingly.

Secret 3: Always Use the Actual Saree or Lehenga for Colour Matching

Bring your saree or lehenga fabric to every fitting. Blouse fabric that looks like a perfect match in isolation can look slightly off when draped with the saree. Always compare the blouse fabric against the saree in natural light before cutting.

Secret 4: The Back Length Matters as Much as the Front

Many women focus entirely on the front of the blouse and forget about the back. A blouse that is too short at the back will ride up when you sit down. A blouse that is too long will bunch under the saree. The correct back length depends on your torso length and the style of saree draping you prefer.

Secret 5: Always Do a Fitting Before Final Tailoring

Never allow a tailor to tailor your blouse to completion without an intermediate fitting. The fitting should be done with the blouse basted (loosely tailored) so that adjustments can be made easily. This is especially important for blouses with complex back designs or heavy embroidery.
