Your First Tailoring Appointment — What to Expect

Visiting a tailor for the first time can feel overwhelming. What should you bring? How do you communicate what you want? How do you know if the tailor is taking the right measurements? At Dune Aura Boutique in Sector 9A, Gurugram, we want every client to feel confident and prepared when they visit us. This guide covers everything you need to know before your first tailoring appointment.

Before You Visit — Preparation

Know your measurements (or be ready to take them)

The most important measurements for ladies tailoring are:

  • Bust: Measured around the fullest part of the chest
  • Waist: Measured around the narrowest part of the waist
  • Hips: Measured around the fullest part of the hips
  • Shoulder width: Measured from shoulder point to shoulder point across the back
  • Blouse length: From the shoulder to where you want the blouse to end
  • Sleeve length: From the shoulder to where you want the sleeve to end
  • Height: Important for lehenga and suit length

If you do not know your measurements, do not worry — your tailor will take them at the appointment. But knowing your measurements in advance helps you communicate more precisely.

Gather reference images

The single most effective way to communicate what you want is to bring reference images. Pinterest, Instagram, and bridal magazines are great sources. Save 3–5 images that show:

  • The overall silhouette you want
  • The neckline design
  • The back design (especially important for blouses)
  • The sleeve style
  • The embroidery or embellishment style (if any)

Be specific about what you like in each image. "I like the neckline from this image but the sleeve from that one" is perfectly fine — your tailor can combine elements from different references.

Bring your fabric

If you have already purchased your fabric, bring it to the appointment. This allows the tailor to assess the fabric, understand its weight and drape, and give you an accurate price and timeline estimate.

If you have not purchased fabric yet, you can either buy it from our shop at Sector 9A or visit a fabric market first. Chandni Chowk in Delhi and Sadar Bazaar in Gurgaon are good options for fabric shopping.

Wear the right undergarments

Wear the undergarments you plan to wear with the finished outfit. The fit of a blouse or suit depends on the undergarments worn underneath. If you plan to wear a padded bra with your blouse, wear it to the fitting.

Bring your shoes

For lehengas, sarees, and floor-length suits, bring the heels you plan to wear. The hem length is calculated based on your height with heels.

At the Appointment — Communication Tips

Be specific about the occasion

Tell your tailor exactly what the outfit is for — a wedding, a festive occasion, office wear, or everyday wear. This helps the tailor recommend the right fabric weight, embellishment level, and silhouette.

Discuss your comfort preferences

Tell your tailor how you like your clothes to fit — fitted, relaxed, or somewhere in between. If you have specific comfort concerns (a blouse that is too tight around the arms, a waistband that digs in), mention them upfront.

Ask about the timeline

Always ask for the expected delivery date before leaving your fabric. For standard suits and blouses, 5–7 working days is typical. For bridal outfits, 2–4 weeks is standard. If you have a specific deadline, mention it clearly.

Ask for a price estimate

Get a price estimate before leaving your fabric. A good tailor will give you a clear, itemised estimate covering tailoring, lining, and any embellishments. Avoid tailors who are vague about pricing.

Take photos of your fabric and design brief

Before leaving, take a photo of your fabric and any reference images you have shared with the tailor. This creates a record of what was agreed and helps avoid misunderstandings.

At the Fitting — What to Check

When you come for your fitting, check these things carefully:

  • Shoulder seam: Should sit exactly on the shoulder point, not falling forward or backward
  • Bust fit: Should be comfortable with no pulling or gaping
  • Waist fit: Should be comfortable — not too tight or too loose
  • Length: Check the blouse length, sleeve length, and suit/lehenga length
  • Neckline: Should sit as discussed — not too high or too low
  • Back design: Check the back design matches your reference image

Do not be shy about requesting adjustments. A good tailor expects feedback at the fitting stage and will make adjustments without complaint.
